Cabin Living

My wife and I both grew up with access to family cabins.  We both relished those times we could get away with our loved ones and just hang out away from the hectic-ness of daily life.  Both of us found those vacation homes wonderful escapes.  Interestingly enough, our most treasured memories from childhood often involve those cabins, and that has impacted our adult lives as well.

We found ourselves utilizing the site, Vacation Rental by Owner, www.vrbo.com for little getaways once or twice a year.  All of our experiences were positive, taking in the peace and calm that comes when one can truly take a little hiatus, if only for a weekend.   We also discovered that many people rent out their cabins when they cannot use them.  We took lots of notes as owning a cabin was a long term goal. Eventually, the right property came up and we achieved that dream.

Vacation homes can be a great investment.  However, all too often, people don’t think everything through to ensure they find just the right property.  If you are seeking out a vacation home, here are some things to consider:

  • What is your primary purpose for your cabin?
  • Do you want a second home for your family?
  • A place to retire?
  • Or a rental property you can enjoy once in a while?

  • Consider the stairs—Do you have anyone in your family with mobility issues?  Do you need a main level bedroom?  If planning to retire to your cabin, be sure a main level bedroom and bathroom are part of your plan.

  • What is the zoning?  If you are planning to rent out the property as a vacation rental (rather than long term) it is essential to investigate the zoning restrictions, even if you know it's being done in that area. Counties all over the country are cracking down on VRBO type rental properties.  Recently real estate agents all over Pennington County received a letter from lawyers talking about the laws that will now be more strictly enforced in certain parts of the Black Hills region.

Owning a vacation home can be a beautiful way to make family memories.  If you need help finding one, I’d be happy to help.

On the other hand, renting a vacation home can be equally beautiful!  So if you just want a little vacation without the commitment, check out the www.vrbo.com website for affordable options.  Either way, you are bound to ENJOY THE ADVENTURE!

Happy Vacationing!
